Keeping The Spirits Alive - February 2010

February is here and this month, love is in the air. But what few people do is acknowledge and love themselves. In this month's blog, I write & share about ways we can connect with ourselves & welcome the stress that we give ourselves. I also share a very heartwarming story in ASK CHRISTOPHER ALLAN about my experiences with humor on the Other Side. In my 5 MINUTE MEDITATION, I share a simple, yet very effective exercise involving simply your mind and your fingers (it's great for lowering anger!)

'WHY YOU SHOULD BLESS YOUR STRESS'
Author - unknown
Although relaxation ought to be, um, relaxing, stress management has somehow become another pressing item on our to-do list. We're made to feel like failures if we can't balance ourselves. But stress is good. The discomfort of stress is a sign that you are tackling life's problems head-on. Stress improves productivity and performance --at work, at the gym --and your body will be stronger if you alternate periods of calm & excitement.
Once stress reaches a certain level, however, productivity goes down. Too much stress leads to sleep problems and irritability and can lead to a weakened immune system.
Your goal is not to completely avoid stress & lounge in your pj's all day. Not only is the couch potato life boring, it's a classic sign of depression.
Know this: Sometimes stress will get the better of you. A crucial aspect of stress management is self-acceptance --knowing that you are, for example, a stress eater. There may be days when you are so frustrated that you eat everything in the fridge. It happens. Do what you can to prevent these reactions. Meditation is great, or keeping a food or personal diary --connect with yourself and then move on.

THIS MONTH: Kundalini Meditation for you to try.
This meditation is a simple meditation and one of the first learned in this style. It is also very good for beginners in meditation because it offers not only 1 but 2 focus points to keep your mind from wondering. One is the mantra and the other the finger exercise.
The Mantra being used is Sa Ta Na Ma. The meaning of this Mantra is very simple.
1. Sa means Birth it represents the beginning, it also represents infinity.
2. Ta represents Life, both your own and all life as well.
3. Na represents Death or the end of something (your stress for example or doubts about God if you are more spiritually inclined) also it is about totality. Because death is the sum of everything it gives completion a view of the whole of something.
4. Ma represents rebirth or resurrection. When we thing of this we can also relate this to a change in our self or our surroundings.

SO LETS BEING:
While sitting in the basic 'indian style' sitting posture you will chant the above mantra while focusing your attention on this finger exercise: With your palms up and resting on your knees touch your thumb to the corresponding finger to the mantra. For Sa you will touch to the index finger, Ta to the middle finger, Na to the ring finger and Ma to the pinky finger.
To get the most out of your meditations you can do them twice everyday. The best practice for this meditation is one time in the early morning for about 5-10 minutes and again in the evening. After a week or so you will notice yourself being a lot more relaxed and being very slow to anger.
We have more information on Kundalini yoga on our site. As well as on many other styles of yoga.

Each month, readers & fans ask Christopher Allan questions pertaining to his understanding of mediumship, the afterlife, and experience of being psychic.

Q: Does the Other Side have a sense of humor? If so, what are some experiences you've had that showed their light side?

A: I believe that our personalities do not change much at all when we pass away. In fact, whatever positive personality traits we have here on Earth that really define who we are, if anything, magnify times 10. So if someone was known for their humor in life, the same would hold true in the afterlife.
When I reconnect families with loved ones in Spirit, it's a serious task for me to be a part of. However, Spirits often like to remind the family I'm reading about the happy times and those moments that bring a smile to any face.
Most recently, I met a woman who's son came through to her during our reading and told his mom about a video she had of him dancing in their family room. It was then, this grief stricken mother balled over in laughter with the new found understanding that her son was okay. So 'okay' as to let her know about this video that she had kept of her son from his childhood. Turns out when this boy was alive he would never let the family videotape anything "cute" of him. So this mom resorted to 'hiding' the family video camera & see what she could get of him before he got too old. One morning while thinking no one was around in the house, his favorite music videos came on and proceeded to mimic his favorite pop stars for a good 10 minutes in his pajamas.
Oh by the way, have you read about how Spirits show me 'MY LIFE EXPERIENCE' to get me to say what it is Spirit wants me to say. Let's just say, I could relate to this story. Blush...
The amazing thing was, when this son was alive, he never knew about this video. The week before this mom came to see me, she stumbled upon the video & popped it in the VCR. While reviewing this hidden footage, she cried & laughed the entire time. It reminded her just how 'special' her son was. I guess someone else was watching too.
Sometimes, our loved one's in Spirit want us to relive those moments to convey that it's okay to smile while we mourn. For this mom, even in grief, she learned laughter can still be the best medicine.

'THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING'

Positive thinking brings inner peace, success, improved relationships, better health, happiness and satisfaction. It also helps the daily affairs of life move more smoothly, and makes life look bright and promising.

Positive thinking is contagious. People around you sense your mental moods and are affected accordingly. Think about happiness, good health and success, and you will cause people to like you and desire to help you, because they enjoy the vibrations that a positive mind emits.
In order to make positive thinking yield results, you need to develop a positive attitude toward life, expect a successful outcome of whatever you do, but also take any necessary actions to ensure your success.

Effective positive thinking that brings results is much more than just repeating a few positive words, or telling yourself that everything is going to be all right. It has to be your predominant mental attitude. It is not enough to think positively for a few moments, and then letting fears and lack of belief enter your mind. Some effort and inner work are necessary. Are you willing to make a real inner change? Are you willing to change the way you think? Are you willing to develop a mental power that can positively affect you, your environment and the people around you?
Here are a few actions and tips to help you develop the power of positive thinking:
  • Allow into your awareness only feelings of happiness, strength and success.Try to disregard and ignore negative thoughts. Refuse to think such thoughts, and substitute them with constructive happy thoughts.

  • In your conversation use words that evoke feelings and mental images of strength, happiness and success.

  • Before starting with any plan or action, visualize clearly in your mind its successful outcome. If you visualize with concentration and faith, you will be amazed at the results.

  • Watch movies that make you feel happy.

  • Minimize the time you listen to the news and read the papers.

  • Associate yourself with people who think positively.

  • Always sit and walk with your back straight. This will strengthen your confidence and inner strength.

  • Walk, swim or engage in some other physical activity. This helps to develop a more positive attitude.
  • Always use only positive words while thinking and while talking. Use words such as, 'I can', 'I am able', 'it is possible', 'it can be done', etc.

Think positive and expect only favorable results and situations, even if your current circumstances are not as you wish them to be. In time, your mental attitude will affect your life and circumstances and change them accordingly.

THIS MONTH: YOUR COMPLETE BREATH
This months meditation shouldn't be called 'Christopher Allan's 5 Minute Mediation' as I am respectfully sharing an important aspect of meditation & it's actually from medium John Holland's book 'Psychic Navigator'. A great read that includes this wonderful exercise.

In order to meditate properly and effectively, there needs to be rhythm in your breathing. This is the Complete Breathe Exercise.

Sit down with your back straight. Breathe through your nose, inhaling steadily for 5 seconds. Slowly breathe into your stomach, letting the air move up to your lower lungs, & then into your chest area. Hold your breath for 3 seconds, then exhale very slowly from your mouth,- holding your chest in a firm position while drawing in your abs slightly, and slowly lift it upward as the air leaves your lungs. When all the air is exhaled, relax your chest & abs. You have just did one Complete Breathe.
This needs to be carried out in one slow, continuous breath, which will be distributed to all three parts of the lungs. Make sure you feel it in all of these parts when you're supposed to. Some people prefer to practice near a mirror while placing their hands on their abs. You may feel a little 'jerky' in the beginning, but soon you'll be able to complete this in one smooth breathe.
Soon you'll quickly understand how it will benefit you in all your future breath work & meditations I will be writing about in the coming blogs. Remember "you are your breath."

Q:Can you connect with your own loved ones & can you help your family the same way you've helped people like me?
A:
I absolutely can and often do connect with my loved ones in Spirit. Relationships we have with family are ones that will always exist even beyond physical death. I am no exception. However, conveying this connection in a manner that helps my own family is not always as easy for me as it involves people I know so much about.
On a personal level, I feel very much attached to my family and friends who have passed on. When I do live events, I always try to invite family & friends to sit in the back row. Often, messages that come through for other families have much meaning & inspiration to my relatives in the audience. To me, this is not coincidence.
I was inspired to work in the field of mediumship to put myself out there so those I care about the most could witness & become students of my work just like you. This also supports the benefit of experiencing mediums in a group setting. Although you may not get a direct reading, it can enhance your awareness to the process that I demonstrate & can greatly affect you in-directly.
When I can, I like to have fellow mediums I am blessed to call friends, sit down with my family who want a reading. My loved ones can come through another source, one that isn't so objective as I am when reading them. Infact, I will be doing an event next month with two gifted mediums who have helped me greatly in this field. Check them out at BobbiAllison.com and Kimthehappymedium.com .

Keeping The Spirits Alive - April 2009

Spring is here! This season represents life its self, its the birth of the new buds, the spring showers that feed our earth, the new light of day after being in the dark early nights for so long, seeing the dew sitting on top of the grass blades, twinkiling like droplets of pearls, dancing down the stems. Adore this springmonth of April!

This month, we have a story about finding beauty in the tiniest things. Christopher Allan's 5 minute mediation gives you an effective exercise to do right before bed! It's a great meditation that will help clear your mind & become more intuned with your inner-self. And in Ask Christopher Allan, he answers the most frequently asked question not found on his website!

'SPIRITUAL SPACES' by Sue G, Malvern, PA.

(A GOOD VIEW)
My cats love my window seat in my house, even though the view isn't spectacular. That's where they watch leaves scatter, chat with birds, curl up for a nap in the sunlight, and wait for me to come home. Every day I take each cat for a walk on the patio while the other sits at the window & waits his turn. Seeing a cat on the window seat...for me, that's the best view there is. It reminds me to be more like my cats --to be patient and generous and to see beauty in the tinest of things.

THIS MONTH: Simple & Effective -- The Bedtime Meditation
During a busy day, it's hard to find time to focus & meditate effectively. So as soon as you get into bed, try this simple mantra-based technique. Start with five to 10 minutes, it may even help those who struggle falling to sleep!

1. Lying on your back, close your eyes and notice your breath.
2. As you inhale, focus on a soothing phrase, such as "I am safe and whole." You can say it aloud or in your mind. When exhaling, silently repeat the phrase. The specific phrase isn't that important; the mantra's purpose is to give your mind something simple to focus on.
3. If your mind wanders, gently turn your attention back to your breath and back to the mantra.
4: As listed above, repeat this mahntra for 5-10 minutes. You will notice yourself becoming more relaxed & your mind will become more clearer with each repetition.

As a psychic medium, the most asked question would probably be 'So when did you first realize you had this ability'. Because my birthday is this month, I thought I'd share with you my first experience with the afterlife.
It's always been hard for me to figure out when exactly I realized I could communicate with Spirit. Ever since I could remember, I always had this feeling of being 'never truly alone'. I never woke up from a life threatening illness with a new lease on life & this ability. I never had an experience where the Heavens ripped open and God himself appeared to me. My first encounter, suprising to many, was more subtle & in many ways --'natural'.
I was 5 years old, visiting my grandparents house in Babylon, NY. It was the day after Christmas & the family had come over for holiday left-overs . As soon as we were done eating, I began coloring my new coloring book I'd recieved the night before. Laid out on the floor I was creatively at work when I heard a voice explaining, "The phone is going to ring, if your grandmother starts crying, just hug hard her for me, we'll be together real soon."
Before I could even process what I just heard, the phone rang, my grandmother picked up. It was a woman who called to inform my grandparents that Sal, a close friend of the family, had passed away on Christmas Eve. As soon as she hung up the phone, she told my family the news & instantly became overwhelmed with tears. I thought to myself 'How did I know that the phone was going to ring? How did I know she would become upset by the call?'. At the time, as confusing as it was, I didn't ignore it nor question it further. I simply listened to what I was told and put coloring on hold. I climbed up to my grandma who was visably shaken. I gave her the biggest hug I could & then whispered, "don't cry, you will see each other again before you know it".
I'll never forget that moment, this sad situation somehow brought my grandmother & I closer. Looking back, it may have foreshadowed my grandmother's own mortality & my connection with her. My grandmother would pass away, a latter 6 years to the day I had my first memorable experience with Spirit.

Keeping The Spirits Alive - March 2009

This month we have a wonderful story of a young woman who lost her aunt right before she gave birth to her 1st child. But even death, couldn't let this aunt from finishing her last piece of work. We also share with you the most important meditation excerise of all, knowing and learning how to effectively clear your mind & focus. The best part about it? It only takes 5 minutes. And in ASK CHRISTOPHER ALLAN, we share one clients couriosity of butterflies and shed some insight on this powerful symbol.

'AUNT JUNE - MORE THAN COINCIDENCE' by M. Gerst
Aunt June was always there for me growing up. She wasn’t really my aunt – she was one of my mother’s best friends. But she was more like family. She saw me through dance recitals, first dates, and made sure I was well polished in table manners and full of southern charm. I loved to watch her knit, her hands deftly gliding the needle in and out, turning mere yarn into beautiful things. When I was pregnant with my first child, Aunt June told me she wanted to knit a blanket for my baby. But she never had the chance. She passed away that summer, a few months before my baby girl was born.
I thought about my aunt as I rocked my newborn in my arms. Aunt June would’ve loved to be part of this, I thought. I wished my baby could have felt the love and care that Aunt June had given to me for all those years.
Two years later I was expecting another child. I vowed that this time I would try to knit a blanket like aunt June would have made.
One day, after a visit to the doctor, I ran to the local thrift store to buy some yarn. They had a used yarn bin that I would sometimes pick from. I dug around, looking for a bargain. Then I saw it, a big bag of cream-colored yarn with a pair of needles –and it was only one dollar. Someone had even started knitting a pattern for a blanket. I bought it and headed home. I was so exhausted when I got back that I tucked the bag of yarn into the closet & forgot about it.
A few weeks later I planned to visit my mother. I should bring that yarn with me, I’ll have time to knit over there, I thought. I reached into the closet & pulled out the bag. When I took the yarn out at my mother’s house, a piece of paper fell from the bag and fluttered to the floor. What is that? I wondered. I squatted down & picked it up.
It was a knitting pattern for a baby blanket. And in the corner, the person who started it had written her name: June Gerst. My aunt June.

THIS MONTH: Calm your mind with focus and breathing
Meditation instructor Jim Malloy of St. Petersburg, FL, offers this easy-to-do meditation technique that only requires you to do it once a day for 5 minutes. (It works even better if you give it 20 minutes, twice a day.)

Find a quiet, comfortable place, where you won't be distracted. Sit with your back straight. Place your hands in a comfortable position. If you please, you can call on God or a "higher power" to help you. Allow your eyes to rest comfortably downward, gazing softly but not focused on anything. Let your breathing become deep and rhythmic. It's okay to let your attention drift a bit, but stay relaxed. If your eyes become heavy, let them close. Don't worry about doing it right. You simply want to clear your head, and relax.

This meditation exercise is to stress the importance of focus and breathing. Next month I will feature a meditation that helps you control your breathing better, thus making a great addition to the meditation above.

I had recently been asked by a client about the significance of butterflies. As you may have seen, throughout my website Imstillhere.net, butterflies are very much integrated & symbolize many things to me, personally. I thought I would answer this question here as you may all find this very interesting.
Many people reported receiving a sign which affirmed that their deceased family member or friend had survived physical death and continues to live in another dimension of existence. We call these symbolic After Death Communications or ADC signs. They are a relatively common type of after-death communication.
Some people are sent a sign spontaneously as a gift, while others ask or pray to receive one. Depending on their belief system, they may ask their deceased loved one to give them a sign, or they may pray to God or the “universe” for one.
Typical symbolic ADCs include butterflies, rainbows, flowers, many different species of birds and other animals, and any number of inanimate objects. Whether a sign comes immediately or takes days or weeks to arrive, most people intuitively recognize their sign right away and feel it was intended just for them.
ADC signs provide much hope to those who are grieving deeply, especially bereaved parents and the widowed. But because they are a symbolic form of communication, the receiver must interpret his or her own experience and assign personal meaning to it.
In the first four accounts of symbolic ADCs the experiences received a butterfly as their personal sign.
Caroline is a secretary in Illinois. She had this informative experience after her 24-year-old daughter, Lindsey, was killed by a drunk driver while riding her bicycle:
"After my daughter’s Catholic funeral service, we went out to the cemetery. While Father was saying the final prayers, a big white butterfly landed on Lindsey’s white casket and stayed there the whole time.
When the service was over, Sister Therese hugged me and said, “Oh, Caroline, did you see the white butterfly too? A butterfly is a symbol for the Resurrection!” I never knew that meaning before, and this put me at peace."

The butterfly is the most frequently mentioned ADC sign. It is a spiritual symbol for life after death because of its metamorphosis, or transformation, from a caterpillar that crawls on the ground to a beautiful, almost ethereal creature that flies through the air. It has also become a symbol for personal growth and spiritual rebirth.
